This Rondo in D (K.485) by W.A. Mozart presents not only very melodious passages, but also parts that could come from the orchestral score to an opera, and of course the obligatory virtuoso sequences. The theme phrase is taken through a great number of variations and scale shifts. Some are sombre, some threatening, but in the end, after some very playful variations, serenity prevails. I particularly like the scale shifts of the dissonant side-theme. Michael Bednarek http://mcmbednarek.tripod.com/ Brisbane, August 2003
