The collection of twenty pieces from Köchel Verzeichnis (K.V.) 1-15 is based on Albert Edition 516, 1979, edited by Warren Thomson. Quoth: "The student will find that these charming pieces provide an introduction to the keyboard music of the Viennese Classical Period and to the sonatinas and sonatas of Mozart in particular." Most pieces use simply a piano as instrument. I hope that the use of other instruments follows in an obvious way from the nature of the respective composition. K.V.8 contains many figures that could be used as main themes in works in their own right. Instead, Mozart just uses them as fillers. This will continue throughout many of his works: he just has too many ideas and not enough time to develop them fully. Also, some ideas are just fine as they are, why should one ponder endlessly over them? Having a "Marche" heavily syncopated is probably a mild joke. Nothing in this piece can be used to march soldiers. The work is listed as "Sonata in B flat for Keyboard and Violin" in the list of Mozart's works at the Mozart Project (www.mozartproject.org), so this Menuetto is most probably just one part of a larger work. The same applies to K.V.7. Enjoy! Michael Bednarek mailto:mb@tgm.com.au http://www.geocities.com/mcmbednarek/
