KV 579 "Un moto di gioa" Alternative aria to No.12 "Venite, inginocchiatevi!" This work was probably witten in August 1789 as an alternative aria for Susanna's "Venite, inginocchiatevi!", sung by Adriana Ferrarese del Bene in the Vianna production of 1789. Apparently, Mozart felt that Ferrarese wasn't quite up to the acting demands of the original aria, and he even expressed doubt whether she was up to this work: "I believe the arietta I wrote for Ferraresi should please, if only she could present it artlessly (naïvely), which I doubt." That production also saw "Deh vieni" replaced by KV 577 "Al desio di chi t'adora" (see Nozze27a.txt). The text to both arias is probably by da Ponte. While KV 577 enjoyed quite a success and was distributed widely, i.a. in a handwritten piano reduction by Lorenz Lausch, KV 579 was largely neglected. In recent times, Cecilia Bartoli apparently insisted -much to Jonathan Miller's dismay- on using these two works in four out of eight performances in a production at the New York Metropolitan Opera (1998). The broadcast version of that production also uses these alternative arias. Incidentally, this work is missing from the Mozart Edition, Complete Works, by Brilliant Classics. This is the full score; Nozze12a1 is the piano reduction. Michael Bednarek mb@mbednarek.com http://mbednarek.com/
