When I recently attended my son's graduation ceremony at Griffith University in Brisbane, the organist played "Gaudeamus igitur" at the end. I only knew this song from conservative, colour-bearing university students' associations in Germany and was surprised. Apparently, it is a well known ditty in traditional academia. The lyrics are a strange mixture of melancholy feelings on the passing of earthly existence, some mild humour, praise of females, set to a rather rousing melody.
