As you might have gathered, I'm rather fond of classical music. So my classification and selection of Popular Music is not really what most people would expect. In fact, I already had used the category Other, so I put the remaining pieces into this category. You would not be wrong in assuming that this is my category for music of lesser value. I like a lot of popular music in the genres of rock, jazz, folk, even middle-of-the-road; there are good sounds and melodies, but you should get a CD and listen to them. They don't lend themselves to MIDI reproduction easily, and they rather lose in the tran- scription to a formal score. Maybe that's because the musical depth in the available arrangements is rather shallow. National anthems are rarely good music. Some, like the German one, start as really good music (Haydn), and then get maltreated by men in brass bands. The Australian anthem seems to be written for brass bands, so it's probably less of an affront to the ears. I guess it can be stirring in the right circum- stances. I'm afraid the words came out in a rather small size. I wasn't all that familiar with MOZART at the time. Enjoy! Michael Bednarek http://www.geocities.com/mcmbednarek/
