OUVERTURE Four powerful strokes are the main motive in the brief overture. They might represent the pounding endured by the "poorest of the poor", or they might forebode the inevitable march of the proletariat against the palaces of their oppressors. But then the middle section is a delicate three part invention. Is that the composer showing off, demonstrating what he can do? I rather think that Weill, advancing harmonies and rhythms on the one hand, had a very firm grasp of classical forms and techniques, and he knew when and how to use them, brilliantly incorporating them into his own set of musical and dramatic intentions. Sometimes of course, he used them ironically or in parody (3rd finale). But to do so, one must be very familiar with them. The overture is usually played a bit faster than the indicated tempo, but I followed the printed score. In my opinion the musical structure becomes much clearer with just the piano instrumentation than listening to the full orchestral version, to my ears anyway.
